Adam and Kim tackle the tough niqab debate- when has reasonable accommodation gone too far?

The incident: an Egyptian immigrant taking specialized classes in college, refuses to show her face to the class while giving an oral presentation, and during a seperate group discussion, asks three male students to turn around and not face her.

Should new immigrants be allowed to wear niqabs or burkas? Should Canada be more like France in this regard?

From the March 2, 2010 episode of Sunny Side Up with Adam and Kim

  • this girl is a really radical muslim lady........she needs integration into society a LITTLE bit, if she doesnt want that which is clear...than y the hell is she in canada... a multicultural society?! like im a muslim girl i wear a scarf...not niqab just a headscarf and i was born in canada and its like "dude get a life, telling them to turn around? what is this..they arent animals and ur not their prey!!"

  • she isn't following the requirements of the class or it's purpose. Let her in but flunk her. she can't pass the class. she needs a psychiatrist, not a french class.

  • @Ahlam1981 I agree with you, as a fellow niqabi I have to wonder if this woman really understands anything about wearing niqab at all. Maybe she is not wearing it for the right reasons or needs to educate herself on her Islam and fiqh of women's issues before she decides to educate herself in French. Wa Allahu Alim (And God knows best).

  • The irony is this woman would not have been allowed to wear that niqab at any university in Egypt. The niqab is not part of traditional Egyptian culture; it is an import from Saudi and the Gulf region and is worn as much as a political statement as it is religious one. There is great discussion in Egypt about the use of the niqab and many moderate Muslim Egyptian women are concerned about its increasing popularity and what that means for the country.
