A rare bit of old silent Cine footage of Isle Of Man TT racing from around 1969. Filmed by my Father in Law mostly at Union Mills and Braddan Bridge and featuring a crash, possibly of Fred Walton.
RIDER No.1 at 0:35, I'm assured by the camerman, is DAVE SIMMONDS - 1969 125 cc road racing World Champion. The victory marked the first world championship for Kawasaki.
Simmonds was tragically killed October 23, 1972 in Rungis, France in a fire caused by an exploding gas cylinder in a caravan, while attending the French Grand Prix.
(Excerpt from Classic Racer article) Dave and Billie Nelson went to fight a fire in Jack Findlay's caravan. Billie went to get help, Dave was still inside when there was an explosion. His wife Julie (Mick Boddice's sister) dragged him out and was burnt badly herself.
THE CRASHER at 1:31 (details/research kindly supplied by Johnypebs)
The rider who fell at Braddan Bridge might be FRED WALTON. The crashed bike no.16, being wheeled away near the end of the film, definitely has a Rickman Mettise chassis. The other bikes in that race seen in the film include Yamaha twins, so it's likely that it's the junior race. The only dnf Mettise framed bikes in the '69 junior were Alan Barnett who was bike no.5 and Fred on his Vellocette Mettise, but I can't find any link with no.16, so it's just my best guess.
If you know who any of the other riders are/were please let me know & I'll add it ;o)
My thanks to johnypebs for the info on the crasher at 1:31 which I have added above ;)
