About my grandfather:
"I was born on the 20th of March 1925, in a Romanian-Ukrainian border village. My mother was Italian, my father Polish and I am Rusyn.
My career started on this woodworking lathe on the 8th of March, 1942 when my mother took me to Gȧbor Vilmos, in Mȧramarossziget (Sighetu Marmatie), to learn the craft. The contract was signed for two years and eleven months. For 70 years, I am in the same business.
I am an old-school woodturner, in our workshop we never used and use any *high tech* lathe accessories (eg. balancing systems). Everything we manufacture was made with our two hands, without templates. Sometimes we made a thousand replicates of one model, and they all matched. The advantage of this type of manufacturing is that you don't need templates, a simple drawing is enough.
Some of the products from that time which were sold on the local markets: spinning frame machine and wheel, skittle-ball and skittle, toys for kids, cigarette-holders, darning balls.
I learned and worked on this foot-powered woodworking lathe till 1967. And after my release, my master gave it to me. The lathe was disassembled in `67, and was kept in my son's garage.
This woodworking lathe what we use everyday in the workshop, it was designed after my old foot-powered lathe, but it was made of metal with minimal changes. Every lathe tools that we use in woodturning is designed and made in our workshop.
I would like to pass on my knowledge to the next generation, but there are no candidates. Throughout the years I had many apprentices, some of them growing up to be successful craftsman. "

About my father:
" I was also born in a Romanian-Ukrainian village, on the 25th of March, 1953. My mother is Sekler, and my father is Ukrainian, both of them speak the Romanian and Hungarian languages so I grow up as a Romanian citizen but Hungarian minority.
In my youth, I was not interested in the craft, and I tried different professions. My first encounter with wood was in 1981, when I was attending a wood-carving training held by Mr. Romeo (He was one of the best in his field, in Romania). I worked as wood-carver in the local timber industry combine (CPL), after that in the local cooperative. Till the revolution I worked here, and I created unique pieces, only for the House of the Republic, Bucharest.
I started my own business in 1994, a woodturning and wood-carving workshop. My father had leading role in the running of the business, till 2009.
In 2010 my daughter, Kingha, draw my attention to the fact, that wood-turning can be refined into art. After that I try and I finished numerous beautiful pieces. This thing is addictive because my father starts to make besides the daily work pieces, other old fashioned wood works. Nowadays together we have elaborated many new technologies, which I am going to demonstrate in the following video."
All video shootings were made by my son Gábor, in our workshop from Sighetu Marmatiei, Romania.
