Title: Song Ping Ge
Ethnic Miao: The Gejia 革家人

The Ge call themselves Ge Mong.
Population for the Ge is about 70,000. The majority are located in the mountains surrounding Chong'an Township in the central part of Guizhou Province.

There are two theories surrounding the origins of the Ge people. Legend has it that many centuries ago a high ranking Han soldier fell in love with a beautiful Miao girl and desired to marry her. This was an unheard of disgrace at the time and cost the official his title and position. The couple were forced to move away and live apart from both the Han and Miao. Over time, their descendants formed into the Ge people. The second theory, which is perhaps more realistic, is that the Ge are the remnants of a Western Miao group who originally inhabited an area farther to the west.

The Ge women's costume is designed to resemble a general's uniform, in remembrance of their progenitor. The Ge are highly skilled makers of batik.

  • so what are they called if they don't claim to be Hmong/Miao? are they in a different classification in China?

  • Well, they call themselves Ge Mong. It just like how we are Hmong and some of us do not want to be called as Miao. the Hmu and Kanao called them Gedou. they are classified as part of the Miao group. they speak a dialect very similar to Chuanqiandian, the dialect of our.

  • The clothes are similar to most Hmong/Miao styles no doubt but that can be duplicated (learned) much like how Western Hmong adopted Western fashion etc. I have not read (researched) much yet on the Ge Mong group, as I have not come across much about them. What I do know is that their "origin folklore" is different from Hmong/Miao. Theirs is that of a "bamboo diety or descendant". Hmong/Miao of course is from "flooding of the world and a bro and sister". Group in the vid looks more Laos/Mien imo.

  • hey "niamtxiv" i was wondering did we hmong thao back then were living to the far west..and took over some territories longtime ago..i dont understand why they have hitory of that in any of miao history..

  • wow...that's gettin' confusing...

  • Sad Indeed! Just like the Green/Black Hmong in American wants to be call Mong, instead of Hmong.

  • spooky music never hear this Language before.

  • The Gejia called actually call themselves GE MONG. Yes, they are part of the Chuanqiandian branch.

  • 有了回家的感觉

  • This song is kinda spooky. It's like you can almost understand what they are saying. But oh well. But I don't think they consider themselves Miao. But it's okay, they have their reasons to why they wont accept that name. Like the issues and conflicts that led many Western Hmongs/Mongs to ignore/deny that they belong in a bigger group of people known as Miao.
