Speed Limiters on trucks, limiting trucks to a maximum of 105 km/h is having negative effect on road safety. One truckers plea to the public to speak out before someone dies. Ontario & Quebec law reaches beond its boarders. Now even proponents are pushing for this in the USA.
Factual details can be found on the Owner/Operators Business Association of Canada website: www.obac.ca
Just look for the "Speed Limiter" button for details...

UPDATE: The Ontario government requested a study last fall so they could show the positive effect that speedlimiters were having on traffic safety. The current result is there has been no positive effect. They are excusing it with saying they don't have enough data yet. (Thats political talk for "we cant admit we screwed up")

  • I'm not sure I agree with installing speed limiters, but here is some info that most truck drivers don't seem to realize. The stopping distance of a car at 120KPH is about 316 feet. That of a heavy truck is about 525 feet. For a truck to match the same breaking distance, he would have to be going at about 93KPH... What do you think happens to the trucker if he does not stop in time? What do you think happens to a car driver? I kind of think truckers shouldn't drive much over 100KPH to be safe.

  • @rmyers1968

Why would you put a limiter on a vehicle that statistics show do not have a high risk of speeding? Not even a moderate risk. I don't know about your numbers, but I agree that it takes more for a truck to stop than a car. But cars continue to pass, pull in front of, and cut off trucks, often taking away the safety stopping zone the truck driver tries to keep. What is the difference going to be if a truck hit a car at 93km/h? 100km/h? how about 110km/h? The answer is no difference.

  • "they cause the most accidents"

I'm sorry to be the one to correct you, but statistics indicate that trucks that are involved in accidents, 88% of them are not at the fault of the truck but rather the other vehicle.

  • Right on Scott, I agree with what you are saying, I am a truck Driver in AB. and refuse to drive into Ontario for this reason, I beleive if a company wants to speed limit there trucks, but i don't believe a owner operator should be force to. The government put this out there under the guise of SAFETY. But it has not been proven to have any effect on safety. I Know its only a matter of time before it across the country if we don't nip this in the butt right away. Wish i could be there. good luck.

  • ALL vehicles should have speed limiters on them to stop people from speeding all the time. cops do nothing about people speeding and tailgating!! fucking cops anymore!!

  • @woodpusher9871 fast enuff!

  • Do you know if Ontario actually searches truck's fuel tanks for pink diesel?

  • @woodpusher9871 I think its around 65.

  • how fast is 105 km?

  • school busses are only supposed to run something like 55 or 65, ive never seen a bus on the interstate doing less than 70, and when i was younger, busses had an overspeed alarm that beeped at 75, and we made a trip back from a football game, 2.5 hours of straght interstate with the alarm beeping the whole time.

  • i have seen trucks here in east texas running 100 miles an hour (for metric people thats about 160kmph) with loads of 80,000-100,000lbs. i have never seen an artical in the news talking about an overspeed truck killing someone, or an over loaded truck killing anyone. there is a highway that runs right beside the interstate from texarkana to dallas and almost all the speeding trucks and overloaded trucks run down it, with little to no 4 wheel traffic. its normally the 4 wheels fault here

  • trucks should have speed limiters, set 10-15 kmph above the highest legal posted speed on freeways. maybe the way it should be is set at 115 and allow 5 min bursts of 125 at a time before requiring you to return to 115 for a set amount of time

  • @rmyers1968 You bring up good points that were probably used when concocting the law but here's the buster, you have to have training and a commerical drivers license to drive truck. These drivers are trained for the difference in vehicle characteristics. Also 4-wheelers are left blind to the limiters and not given further training on how to drive around limited trucks: i.e. if a truck has to swerve to avoid a crash, he can't speed up to avoid the car in the fast lane from rear ending him.

  • I totally agree, I haven't found a truck driver past or present that doesn't agree on this topic. Another bit of info: a split speed difference between vehicles on the highway has always been known to be a contributing factor in the cause of same-direction accidents. Two vehicles traveling the same speed in the same direction will never crash until something changes.

I too think limiters are just plain dangerous, it's even worse that 4-wheelers don't even realize it.
