One of the most fantastic moments of the last Gouveia Art Rock festival in Portugal was the sunday morning debate. It was conducted by the swedish musicologist Thomas Olsson and the general surprise was the presence of ALL the members of Van der Graaf Generator, plus Mike Keneally former bandmate of Frank Zappa, Joris Vanvinckenroye and Axelle Kennes from Aranis, Par Lindh (swedish keyboardist) and Mike Johnson (Thinking Plague). Here Peter Hammill gives his view on the debate's question: "Does humour belong in music?"

  • Why This in Not all?

    But Thank You for This

  • I filmed this with a photo camera, so I only have these short clips. But I think every year the festival releases a book on the previous year discussion, and I believe they are going to do that in 2009... So, maybe we all can get the whole picture of it.

  • Will you be uploading footage of anyone else talking at this discussion? It would be great to hear Mike Keneally.

  • Sorry, no Mike Keneally. It was a fantastic discussion but I preferred to watch than to start filing it all... anyway, I have more VdGG stuff and I think it's got... humour!!! ;)

  • As soon as you have made a thought, laugh at it —Lao Tzu

Great interview clip. Thanks for posting.

  • Ha ha! I heard my camera noise @ 0:52! Someone must have been using an Aiptek!

  • Does it ever make you wonder what sort of person would even ask that question? "Wow, this song is funny....but should it be so"? I would love to hear a serious answer being "No" just to hear the guy give his reasons why, then laugh at his sorry ass.

  • Thank you so much for this!

  • One of things I loved about Keneally's music *is* the humor in it.

  • Splendid!

I'd love to see some more of this. :-)

  • I understand completely! Thank you for the things you have uploaded, they are indeed fantastic. 8^D
