This is a little music theory lesson on chords, how they work, and the basic intervals that make them up. Learning the underlying music theory behind chords will not only allow you to find any chord you want, anywhere you want, it will also give you a solid foundation to build your entire understanding of music theory on.

Here's part 2, for whenever you're ready:

I have a bachelor's in music (I took about a billion theory courses), and I'm a full time music teacher. After trying to help so many people learn music theory, I've decided that this is the best, most useful and most easily understood way into music theory. You don't need to know anything about music to get started on this, other than the names of the notes (and if you don't know that then google it; it's cake). Have fun.

  • Good stuff! I picked it up thru reddit. God bless the internets!!!

  • @SideHatchStudios I was wondering where that little bump in views was coming from.

  • very awesome dude!!

  • @bakerster Well thanks.

  • I don't play the piano, but this makes me feel like switching to it. Thanks.

  • @tanmnm It's an awesome instrument to learn, even if it's just secondary to whatever else you play. It's really easy, and it makes everything so much clearer as far as understanding music. If you go to school for music, they make you learn basic piano. It's really helpful.

  • I took piano lessons for 2 LONG years as a kid but was never taught any music theory beyond "FACE" and "Every Good Boy Does Fine." It probably took me 4 years of teaching myself guitar before I noticed the maj3 min3 pattern, but I didn't know what to call it. I only knew the shape.

    This was so helpful :D

    PLEASE MAKE MORE OF THESE!!

  • Thank you so much. Top video

  • great job, very clear and easy to follow. thanks

  • You have made simply the clearest and most intelligent explanation of chords I've ever seen. I'm not a musician and I was always intrigued by qualities like major, minor, augmented, diminished, for which I had never found accessible explanations.

Thank you so much for using your time to spread such a wonderful knowledge!

  • Great Lesson! Extremely useful, and the format is concise but doesn't feel rushed at all. As a kid I learned to play the organ and my education was very repetition and memorization based, and I never really took to it well. I much prefer this theory based approach.

  • This is the best music lesson I've ever had by far, thank you!
