John O'Hara & his Playboys - We've gotta get out of this place 1965
Original by 'The Animals' (1965)

In this dirty old part of the city
Where the sun refused to shine
People tell me there ain't no use in tryin'

Now my girl you're so young and pretty
And one thing I know is true
You'll be dead before your time is due, I know

Watch my daddy in bed a-dyin'
Watched his hair been turnin' grey
He's been workin' and slavin' his life away
Oh yes I know it

(Yeah!) He's been workin' so hard
(Yeah!) I've been workin' too, baby
(Yeah!) Every night and day
(Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!)

We gotta get out of this place
If it's the last thing we ever do
We gotta get out of this place
'cause girl, there's a better life for me and you

Now my girl you're so young and pretty
And one thing I know is true, yeah
You'll be dead before your time is due, I know it

Watch my daddy in bed a-dyin'
Watched his hair been turnin' grey, yeah
He's been workin' and slavin' his life away
I know he's been workin' so hard

(Yeah!) I've been workin' too, baby
(Yeah!) Every day baby
(Yeah!) Whoa!
(Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!)

We gotta get out of this place
If it's the last thing we ever do
We gotta get out of this place
Girl, there's a better life for me and you
Somewhere baby, somehow I know it

We gotta get out of this place
If it's the last thing we ever do
We gotta get out of this place
Girl, there's a better life for me and you
Believe me baby
I know it baby
You know it too

  • I used to go to the 'Black Swan' in Sheffield on Tuesays-he would be on with Joe Cocker.I worked with him later on when he had a place in Sunderland. There wasn't a more versatile singer on the planet at the time. He would start off with'Band of Gold' in Freda Payn's key. His single of 'Summertime' was great as was his version of 'Show me'-the Joe Tex song....The guy was legendary.

  • Great stuff ..... Lyndloo...

  • Personally i like this version alot, the singer has passion in his voice, unlike the million take version on the album, the sound isnt over modified, and you can get a glimpse of some life and dance styles of the era in the video, i Love this video and so far have watched it and listened to it just to soak it all in like 10 times in a row

  • i was his drummer in 79 john is a brilliant singer nobody does stevie wonder any better cheers john...Ez

  • Singer sings the 'Cause girl there's a better life...' part very well. Otherwise I'm not so impressed.
