My first cross country flight in an engineless sailplane, a simple 20 mile out-and-back. The turnpoint is the "Black Radar", the Nexrad weather radar dome promonent on the ridge between the Willamette Valley and the Columbia River Valley, just NW of Portland, Oregon, and 10 miles from the Gliderport. The airplane is a single-seat sailplane built in Poland, the PZL-Bielsko SZD 51-1 "Junior", with a 15 meter (49.2 ft) wingspan, and a 34.8:1 glide ratio. Will my developing soaring skills be enough to get me to the Black Radar and back again?
Perhaps some old buzzards are smirking at that XC. But for hopeful future pilots like me it was thrilling to watch. . .again! Looking forward to more. Congrats!
