Doberman

This is my Doberman, Elly. If you have negative thoughts about ear cropping or tail docking I am asking you to keep them to yourself. If you do post a negative comment about those processes your comment will be deleted and you will be blocked. The Doberman breed was founded in 1890 and since then the ear cropping and tail docking was a part of the Doberman's appearance, so over 120 years those processes were and still are being preformed on Dobermans today. So I feel as if it is the owner's choice of they choose to carry on the Doberman's traditional look or not, but if they do choose so then they should not be yelled at for it. Thanks, again.

How long did you have to keep your dog's ears taped/posted?

@blackbriar246 She has long show cropped ears. It took about 10 months until they stood up without falling or standing weird. It was a long process but they turned out wonderful!

@aSh9432 Well you and whoever cropped her ears did a great job. I've heard the show crop can be a huge pain! Bu they turned out absolutely gorgeous. :)

@blackbriar246 She was never in pain, the only time she would be is RIGHT after they got done and they would rub on the head cone, but the vet gave me pain killers for her. We have been owning/breeding Dobermans in our family for 30 years. We always get show crop, they are more expensive and take longer to stand but they look the best. She turned out to be a great size female. I am going to make a third update very soon.

Nice pups and very large pup dude.I would like 2 no more about ear croping i have a dobe book but its vague about croping i always thought the breeders sorted it befour they sold and there must be different sizes like in the pictures.Its such a pity the goverment in northern ireland are a bunch of narrow minded butmunches, check out my dobe matrix in my page its called = doberman in mournes snow..... keep up the good work.

You have a nice looking Doberman yourself. My parents have been breeding Dobermans for 15 years and have had them for 20 plus years. We had a litter in July and I picked one out. Her father is 120 lbs on average, and tops out to 125 to 130 lbs. He also stands at 29 inches. Her mother is a little bit shorter stands at 25 inches and weighs about 65 to 70 lbs. Elly is only 5 and half months old and weighs 50 lbs right now, but I do not know how tall she is I'm guessing maybe 20 to 22 in.

@aSh9432 I meant pain like it would be annoying to keep her ears taped and cleaned for so long. I am a supporter of cropping; I don't think a Doberman looks like a Doberman without it. Can't wait to see your update! :)

@riffer00 Sometimes the breeders will get the pup cropped for you (they get whichever crop you want), but most breeders won't keep the puppy that long and will let you find a vet/choose when to get the crop. There are 3 styles: working, standard, and show. All have different healing times, but none of them are all that painful for the dog.

beautiful Dog I just love Dobermans, mine is so goofy and he eats everything in sight. last night I took some meat out the freezer to thaw and he ate it off the counter. any tips on how to get him to stop putting everything in his mouth? anyway loved the video.

One final note for those of you who are wondering why I now have a Golden Retriever. Yes, I am a "Doberman guy" and I love the breed, but when you bond with an individual dog, that transcends breed considerations. I adopted my Golden Retriever from my daughter. He and I had already bonded very strongly over the course of several years and I wouldn't trade him for any dog in the world. He's my best friend and I love him very much, with or without his floppy-eared dog problems.

I should add that the reason an upright ear is healthier is that it allows air to circulate in the ear canal whereas a floppy ear blocks it and creates a warm, moist environment for bacteria. All wild canids have an upright ear, This also aids in sound location, collecting sound waves rather than blocking them. A cropped ear replicates what nature intended, plus it looks better on Dobies. My 1 criticism would be that Doberman ears are often cropped too long. I prefer the shorter working crop.
