Alla mia sinistra i colpi avevano la tagliente forza esplosiva dell'artiglieria di fanteria, alla mia destra era possibile avvertire gli sporadici colpi di cannone rimbombare dal fronte, e sopra il cielo era sereno ed il sole splendente...

On my left the shooting had the sharp explosion of the infantry artillery, on my right could be heard the sporadic cannon shots thundering from the front, and up above the sky was clear and the sun bright.

Sono andato attraverso i campi al fine di evitare le dritte autostrade, lungo le linee di fuoco dove la gente sparava in direzione di una piccolo collina boscosa, che ora è coperta da croci di legno e filari di tombe anzichè da fiori primaverili...

I went across the fields to avoid the straight highways, along the firing lines where people were shooting at a small wooded hill, which is now covered with wooden crosses and lines of graves instead of spring flowers.

Non ho bisogno di cose astratte, essendo ogni oggetto già abbastanza irreale, così irreale che io posso renderlo reale soltanto attraverso la pittura...

I hardly need to abstract things, for each object is unreal enough already, so unreal that I can only make it real by means of painting.

Sto cercando per il ponte che si protende dal visibile all'invisibile attraverso la realtà.

I am seeking for the bridge which leans from the visible to the invisible through reality.

Altezza, larghezza e profondità sono i tre fenomeni che devo trasferire in un unico piano per formare la superficie del quadro astratto, e quindi per proteggere me stesso da l'infinità dello spazio.

Height, width, and depth are the three phenomena which I must transfer into one plane to form the abstract surface of the picture, and thus to protect myself from the infinity of space.

Credo che la ragione per cui amo così tanto la pittura è che costringe ad essere obiettivi. Non c'è nulla che odio più di sentimentalismo.

I believe that the reason why I love painting so much is that it forces one to be objective. There is nothing I hate more than sentimentality.

Che cosa sei? Che cosa sono io? Queste sono le domande che costantemente mi perseguitano e mi tormentano e che forse giocano un qualche ruolo nella mia arte.

What are you? What am I? Those are the questions that constantly persecute and torment me and perhaps also play some part in my art.

Quello che voglio mostrare nel mio lavoro è l'idea che si cela dietro la cosiddetta realtà.

What I want to show in my work is the idea which hides itself behind so-called reality.

SPECTACULAR!! Beckmann's genius has met its match in your masterpiece! You are courageous to post the work of an artist who was not about pretty pictures! He lifted the lid on the modern psyche's pandora's box and painted the solar eclipse of the soul. Beckmann was observer, participant and voyeur in his paintings just as you have made of us!
