Hrishikesh Mukerjee's second directorial venture, after the first one, 'Musafir', a multi-starrer with Dilip Kumar, Usha Kiron, Suchitra Sen, Shekhar and Kishore Kumar had failed. Raj Kapoor came to his rescue just as Dilip Kumar had helped in his first venture. 'Anari' proved to be a hit ending in establishing Hrishida as a trustworthy director. A sensitive film, it had Lalita Pawar in the pivotal role, as a land lady with a sharp tongue but a golden heart, out to help a poor but sincere guy like Raj Kapoor. Motilal adds lustre to the performances. Music was a major highlight of the film as were the performances by the main players, Raj, Nutan, Lalita Pawar and Motilal.
