Phantasy Star IV - Gy-Laguiah - low level clear

This is a battle against Gy-Laguiah at very low levels. The only other battles I have cleared before this one were the other necessary boss fights (Igglanova 1, Igglanova 2, and Juza). Save states were used and abused to reach this point in the game, but they were not used during this fight.

I have also not purchased anything from any stores, which means that all the weapons, equipment, and items used here are those that the party either started with or found in treasure chests. (Notice that Gryz is equipped with the leather helmet and that Rika is using a normal claw.) The only items used were the wood cane and my only repair kit. As you can see, the wood cane is a necessity for this battle.

Chaz, Rika, and Gryz are at least 10 levels below what they should be in order to defeat this boss without difficulty. Rune and Demi are at much higher levels because they join your party at those levels. I placed Rune and Demi at the front of the party because enemies are more likely to attack the party members in front, and these two can afford to take more damage.

Rika has not learned Deban or Saner yet, which means that my party is at a speed disadvantage and cannot reduce the damage taken from physical attacks. Therefore, Gy-Laguiah's normal attack one-hit KOs everyone in my party except Rune (and would also have OHKO'd Rune had I not equipped him with 2 shields). Chaz has not learned Zan yet, which means he cannot team up with Rune to perform the Blizzard attack.

This battle requires a little bit of luck to pull off, but your chance of success increases greatly with the right tactics. Since Demi used her Barrier, the party can withstand more hits from the Firebreath attack, which Gy-Laguiah uses often. I could have used Demi's Phonon skill once (it deals about 200 damage, which is helpful), but she was KO'd early in the fight and the right opportunity to use the specific macro I had created for it never presented itself.

As for the fight... I found it amusing that Chaz couldn't do squat for damage until that last attack.
