a lively, jazzy piece from my first public (non-baroque) ensemble performance, yay!

Claude Bolling - Fugace from Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio

Fugace means 'lively' in Italian, at the same time it has features of a fugue, with repeating and interwoven voices, and the instruments also join in one by one. It's written a bit like an improvised jazz performance, but it's actually all composed, the score indicates two short 2-bar improvisation passages for the piano, but i use version written down, so there is no improvisation here.

Unfortunately, this score is hard to get, and i couldn't find the drum and bass part, so these musicians came up with their own one relying on the recording, which they did very well i think. Overall our performance could musically definitely be improved, a faster (proper) tempo and 'coordination', but with the little practice time we had (none on the day of the performance) and the lack of original scores, i am very satisfied with the result =)

We will probably play more of this exciting suite, i can't wait!

Editing: I used a video stabilization filter (Deshaker in VirtualDub), as this was shot from the audience with a handheld camera, so especially in zoom it's not always in focus.
Audio Editing: Audacity, Recorded separately with a stereo microphone recorder (Zoom H4), unfortunately only in 128 Kbit/s mp3. Also, the recording was very soft, so i used a 6Db amplification (about four times as loud!?).
I hope the balance is alright, the beginning should be mf and the loudest part before the recapitulation ff.
Video Editing: Windows Movie Maker. yes, i know, not a very professional editor ^^ but it makes for quick, simple editing. i'll probably look at better programs soon like sony vegas or adobe/magix something.

Concert: 5th of February 2011, Realschulaula Norden (GER)

  • Bolling is not as awesome as Kapustin, but still pretty cool XD

I remember listening to the flute suite quite a lot a few years.

The baroque/fugue - ness of this piece definitely doesn't make it too easy. Good job. I feel like everyone's playing got better as the piece went on!

  • @RobinLSL forgot AGO after "a few years". I think my favourite movement from the suite was the second one. Had a really Kirby-esque moment in the middle which I really liked.

  • @RobinLSL by the way, bolling's second suite is even more awesome, he seems close to kapustin when you listen to Espiegele, you should look it up on YT!

  • @RobinLSL wow, that was quick! thanks ^^ yeah kapustin is some levels above bolling, who really is more of a jazz pianist, i'm playing him a lot lately. the beginning was a bit rough, yes, we hadn't practiced the piece on that day ^^ btw, i'm still waiting for your kapustin, don't let me be the first to upload at least the next etude :>
