It is seldom understood that traditionally, maca has always been eaten cooked, it is never used traditionally in a raw form. Maca powder frequently sold is actually maca 'flour' or "harina de maca" as it is called (spanish) in Peru and Bolivia. There, it is an inexpensive provincial baking commodity used prolifically in cooking, baking, etc, and consumed in some quantity.

The developed standardized therapeutic product is "gelatinized" maca, and to a lesser extent, the freeze-dried juice forms. When people eat raw maca flour, as many are doing, the side effects are often present - it can disrupt the thyroid (maca is cruciferous, like turnips or broccoli) - and it can also cause digestive upset due to it's thick, tough fiber content. This is why in Peru it is always cooked. I am constantly encountering people who have a neutral or negative experience with maca due either to lack of product potency, or reactions to the uncooked hypocotdyl.
Taking maca flour in pills (or anything under 5-10g /day of the plain herb) won't give a desired therapeutic result in most people. It's just not potent enough to do so in a raw, or uncooked form.

For resources detailing maca's traditional uses, and how it works in the body, I recommend:

Chris Kilham's "Tales From the Medicine Trail" or "Hot Plants"

I've been growing, using, and importing many forms of maca for 10 years. However, I am an ethnobotanist first, and a maca supplier second. I want people to best understand what the plant is, and how exactly to use it since it does have stipulations. This way everyone has a pleasant, safe, and genuine experience with this wonderful plant which we love.

This is our product- the strongest, most energetic, therapeutic Maca we have sampled after trying maca from dozens of growers, distributors, and processors. We believe this gelatinized form best captures the fortifying, uplifting essence that defines maca. In being lightly cooked, our gelatinized maca is closest to traditional preparation, used for thousands of years to enhance stamina, libido, and well-being. It is 100% digestible, and we feel it is the form most acceptable to all people.

Maca is used to remedy:

- Menopause
- Libido / Impotence / Infertility
- Fatigue / Stress / Energy
- Thyroid (only gelatinized assists thyroid function)
- Malnutrition

Each batch of our maca is made fresh to order. It is quickly shipped to us direct from the growers in Peru! This is the freshest, strongest gelatinized product we have ever used!

Maca is the progenitor of Bone Thru the Nose. We use it profusely! It is quite simply the ideal supplement, and we could not be happier to carry such a great product. Our philosophy here is that traditionally, maca is a food, not a supplement to be put in capsule. We feel that most widely available capsule supplements are inappropriate considering maca's copious traditional use as food. To reap the full benefits of maca, it must be part of the diet. We find that good maca is an experience. We hope you will agree.

  • Feel free to do the research yourself. We encourage it.

  • Many distributors are selling the inexpensive, culinary raw maca flour as a new kind of "superfood" for fertility, libido, energy, and what-have-you.

US companies purchase maca flour in bulk and mark it up by a factor of 7-10x. This is why they try to market it as some kind of superfood / health product, as they make lots of money by generating an inflated sense of health virtue.

Gelatinized maca is the actual therapeutic powdered product. It was used in most of the clinical trials.
