MARC BOLAN T REX performing Dandy In The Underworld LIVE at the Rainbow Room 1977 original full lyrics
Marc Bolan - guitar and vocal
Herbie Flowers- bass
Tony Newman- drums
Dino Dines-keyboards and synthesizer
Steve Harley- vocals

A Bolanic revision of Orpheus Descending

Prince of Players, Pawn of none
Born with steel reins on the heart of the Sun
Gypsy explorer of the New Jersey Heights
Exalted companion of cocaine nights **

'Cos he's a Dandy in the Underworld
Dandy in the Underworld
When will he come up for air,
Will anybody ever care *

At an old eighteen exiled he was
To the deserted kingdoms of a mythical Oz
Distraction he wanted, to destruction he fell
Now he forever stalks the ancient
Mansions of hell

* Repeat

Now his lovers have left him
And his youth's ill spent
He cries in the dungeons and tries to repent
But change is a monster and changing is hard
But he'll freeze away his summers in his
Underground yard

  • God, these lyrics are fantastic! I think this might be some of Marc's best writing.

  • @MOJOPIN1960 Great memories. The Dandy concert in Glasgow on Saturday night was cancelled after the audience was in the Apollo theatre as some equipment had been left at the previous venue. They announced that it would take place on the following night. They were selling advance copies of Dandy In the Underworld which I bought and played constantly the next day. So I knew the new songs by the time I heard them live. It was the best T.Rex live performance I ever saw. Sadly it was also the last.

  • @andytrex You are so right ! I was there for this recording - at the Portsmouth Locarno . Live it was a really heavy rocking sound ! Really blew the Damned off stage ! I remember feeling dissapointed when I heard the album because it wasn't heavy enough !

  • Never get tired of listening to Marc Bolan.

    great post.

  • Great live track from a great album. nice guitar solo.

  • Hello

    Nice Post !

  • @andytrex I totally agree Marc Bolan on the way back. Soul of my suit proves that. Hearing an alaternate cut where Marc is directing that song(Soul of my Suit) is further evidence he was coming all the way back.

  • @DAVWAVE I saw T.Rex on the Dandy tour. The organ is very prominent in this mix which I believe was taken from the sound desk. It wasn't a full live recording which would have been brilliant. The sound at the concert was really driven by Marc and Miller's guitars. Dino's keyboard was way down in the mix. And they played really loud!! Steve had left the band after Laser Love and sadly died in a car accident in Portugal in 1980.

The boogie was on its way back. And Gloria had left the band!!!!

  • Brilliant performance of a great song.................only slightly marred by the source master tape going a little warped on some of Marc's high vocal parts.
