This is me trying tameshigiri with a straw mat bought at a garage sale and a Masahiro 1065 katana bought on eBay - for less than the shipping cost. I didn't want to use a better blade for first practice. Am I supposed to tie the base of the mat tight around the supporting peg?

  • It's a Masahiro, can't remember the model. Tsuba has a samurai holding a war fan - $5 plus shipping.

I also have a Masahiro Butterfly.

I like the heft, but they skimped on the fittings. The handle has plastic rayskin and the blade tended to stick in the saya until it was worked a bit.

It's OK for tameshigiri with a drawn blade - but I wouldn't practice Iai with it. The lack of a metal reinforced mouth to the saya worries me. I've heard stories of them splitting in the hand...

  • What sword is that? The Masahiro "Fuji" or the Sakura?
