New York City, USA - Last night Congresswoman Yvette Clarke introduced Dr. Mathieu Eugene as the "Haitian Sensation". Dr. Mathieu Eugene has come out victorious again in the second special election for City Council in Brooklyn's 40th district. This time he can say clearly that he has a mandate. He handily defeated his two opponents, Mr. Wellington Sharpe and Mr. Harry Schiffman. In a field of three candidates and with 100% of the precints reporting, Dr. Mathieu Eugene a Haitian-American received 51.5% of the votes, Mr. Schiffman a Jewish-American with 25.3% and Mr. Sharpe a Jamaican-American received 24.2%. The district united to elect Dr Mathieu Eugene as its representative in Brooklyn's 40th district. In a district heavily populated by people of caribbean descent and other groups. To name most of them, Dr. Mathieu garnered votes across the board from people from Trinidad and Tobago, Dominica, Panama, Barbados, Antigua and Barbuda, St. Lucia, Guyana, Belize, Grenada, The Bahamas, St. Vincent and Grenadines, St. Kitts and Nevis, Montserrat, Pakistan, the Jewish community, and of course from the Haitians and Jamaicans.
The evolution of the caribbean community in the political arena in the United States can not be more evident with Ms. Yvette Clarke a Congressmember, her mother Una Clarke, former Councilmember of Jamaican descent and now there is Dr. Mathieu Eugenes, a Haitian born Councilmember-elect. When you take a closer look at Dr. Mathieu Eugene, you'll find a wise and humble man. A father, a husband, a physician (he does not practice in the U.S.) a community leader, now a politician, and something else that you may not know about yet. Dr. Mathieu Eugene is also a master black belt in karate. He met the world's famous martial arts movie superstar Jean-Claude Van Dam while he was studying in Belgium and they have become good friends ever since.
