The displacement of the sun in symbolism and myth, wherever and whenever it occurred in history, meant the destruction of the metaphor of inner light (and the Third Eye) as ontological identity. It usually gave way to hyper masculine energy in patriarchal extensions of kingship/empire power which concretized in the final phases as the Megalopolis and/or Universal State. This is as true now in the corporate towers that loom over us, and the sun symbols that threaten to swallow us -- as it was ancient Egypt, Babylon, Sumer and Mesopotamia.

Reading is from "Myth of the Machine Vol. II - The Pentagon of Power" By Lewis Mumford. See also William Irwin Thompson "Coming into Being" for a more exhaustive study in the formation of patriarchy in mythology and texts in the evolution of consciousness.

  • Nice idea, to select readings from great writers!

Mumford is one of my all-time favourites. To me he clarifies where we come from and provides insight into how we are still linked to our primal urges and the world views of ancient civilizations.

  • very nice. i call it the organic robot.

  • @HaleyMary Thanks for the feedback!
