"Audience" has not the exact same meaning than "public" in french.
Trust me, the sentence he says sounds very weird to a french ear, and "pour rire" is correct because "pour" shows a kind of consequence the way it is used here.

Im sorry but you can still say audience in french. It's just a bit more formal than public, that's all.
The only awkward thing in this sentence is "pour rire" instead of "de rire", which would be more grammatically correct.

"Dieu est un comédien devant un PUBLIC qui a trop peur pour rire" would be the correct sentence in french, not "devant un AUDIENCE".
But the film is still very good. ;-)
