  • A little over 200 stories if each floor is 10 feet, and the cars are moving at 30 mph.

  • Uhh... Its a Movie, bro.

P.S. Nice possum, lol, I remember when one got into our house one night when we were sleeping, went under the fridge, dog growled, dad was like "what?" mom heard it and was like "here, take this ritz can and catch it" Scared the hell out of the 5-6 year-old me, LOL!

  • technology change is not or only slowly accelerating, because money controlls all nad from purpose big companies will stop the inventions that would limit their profits

  • You're not taking into account three technologies that are coming up: 1) Nanotechnology (specifically nanobots), 2) Robots, 3) A.I. -- Being able to make any part you need atom by atom, having a robot that only requires energy to build what you want out of those parts, and a super-smart intelligence to plan and oversee it all will definitely revolutionize building. It will also lead to revolution, but that's not the point of this thread. We may just get that future yet.

  • This is a case where instinctively you might be right, but in actuality you'd be wrong. Technological change is accelerating exponentially, and with it we change. I'd recommend reading "The Singularity is Near" by Ray Kurzweil.

  • true I love this movie for this style though reminds me of how like Blade runner is depicted as 2019 and thats only a little 10 years away but 2054 who know your right.

  • Actually the timing in the movie does make sense because as DoggySpew says, the car appears faster when close up. Thats real-life trickery of the eye.

Plus if you look down further just as the car turns down the side of the building, you can see that a single lane continues in between the two exits so the car could have been going further.

And i believe it is 2054 actually, but no biggie.

This is still one of my favorite movies by Spielberg

  • You do realise this is set in 2045. I think things could have changed a little by then.

  • I think you are forgetting perspective change. The indication of speed is faster when close by, compared to far off. The actual speed of the cars travel differs enormously. The cars seem to accelarate and slow down, depending position. Initial speed would also change, going horizontally fast is one thing, to go down , it would go elevator speed. Todays buildings elevators also take 45 second to go down. If it goes faster, it would be unsafe and uncomfortable (And this is fiction ofcourse)

  • Not really, the size of buildings today is only limited by the strength of the materials used to build it. Theoretically a strong enough material, like carbon-nanotubes, could be used to construct buildings which are miles high. And this is 2050 after-all, who knows what other advances they've made?
