This is the final play of the four hour battle between Faulkner University and Union College. Faulkner secured the 95-89 win in triple overtime after stopping the Bulldogs on this 4th and 2 try. It's the highest scoring NAIA football game ever. The previous record was 141 points. The score totaled 150 at the end of regulation with a 75-75 stalemate.
Union answered with a two point conversion after a touchdown with just :13 seconds in the fourth quarter to send the contest into extended play. Union and Faulkner both scored TDs and Extra points in the first to overtimes.
Faulkner scored in the third overtime, but missed the mandatory 2 point conversion try. Faulkner's defense forced a fourth and two situation, which, if converted would have given the Bulldogs a new set of downs. This clip is of the final play of the game.
Faulkner normally competes at the Cramton Bowl, Montgomery's city stadium, but a scheduling conflict forced a change of venue. The two teams competed at Alabama Christian Academy, which neighbors the Faulkner Campus.
It was Homecoming, Senior Night and a Blackout game for Faulkner. It is without a doubt the most exciting win in the short history of Eagles football.
Look for an extended highlight clip in the next day or so...
Some Faulkner stats:
Faulkner QB Josh Hollingsworth was 48 for 63 with an NAIA record-setting 637 yards passing (636 previous record) and 7 TD tosses. He also had a 13-yard TD reception courtesy of a toss from receiver Courtney Pete.
Pete was also superb for Faulkner racking up 201 yards and 3 TDs in the air in addition to his 13-yard TD toss to Hollingsworth.
Don Hill had four catches for 131 yards and a score. Chris Kordakis had 7 grabs for 109 yards and 3 TDs and Dimitri Smith had 108 yards on 7 snags.
Brandon Cheatham had 21 touches for 130 yards and five touchdowns for Faulkner.
On the Union side:
QB Moss was 20 of 30 with 392 yards and 4 TDs. See Moss's comments below.
RB Brown had 32 rushes for 229 yards and 4 scores. He also had 5 catches for 110 yards and a pair of TDs.
I work for Faulkner, but these two kids were lights out.
Also for Union, Winkle had six catchs for 97 yards and James had four catches for 90 yards and two TDs.
Faulkner missed tying the NAIA single game TD record of 15 set in 1968. The Eagles needed another score, if you can believe it.
