This is the first launch from Vandenberg AFB of the Atlas V. As of this date, it is the largest rocket ever launched there. The sounds are ambient and accurate. (The voices are not mine or anyone I know). The sound of the rocket is delayed as we are about seven miles from the launch pad. But it is still very impressive. The zoom shot at the beginning was taken just 20 minutes prior to launch. Between then and the time of the launch, the fog rolled in just enough to obliterate the view of the rocket on the pad.

  • @MusashiGSN The following were my favorite places to watch TITAN and ATLAS Launches from. ATLAS A Shale Flat 4.0 Miles to Atlas 34°41'59.90"N 120°34'44.86"W

TITAN "The Wall Beach" 4.95 Miles to Titan ,34°42'20.67"N 120°36'0.30"W Got a funny story bout going to watch an ATLAS launch one night.

  • @MSTLOM In response to your 2 yr old post, the location of this footage is on Hwy 1 north of :Lompoc. Commonly referred to as "Harris Grade." On a clear day the panoramic views overlooking the white cliffs of Sweeney and Santa Rosa Rds to the sparkling ocean and lone oil rig are absolutely spectacular. I thought the digital zpom on the pre-launched vehicle is neat...!

  • @benladinsuxxs The location of viewing is the turnout on Harris Grade and I've watched this video before and thought it was this was the launch on 09/20/2010, but the posting date of this video is 3/15/2008! LOL..! I guess that makes two of us who thought this was the recent Atlas... Same conditions though wouldn't you agree? Slight ground fog over the SLC.

I viewed the 9/2010 immediately north of the pad and south of the South V entrance along with the rest of the civilians. I dig the dbs..

  • Where did you film this from? I was a cop on base the night this was launched and just happened to be posted out near SLC 3 and was probably as close to this launch as you could safely be. I'm pretty sure this is the launch I'm thinking about!! either way, the one I saw I'll never forget.

  • @sparaz

Amen! i sat on my roof and listened to it as it made it's way up :)

  • Just watched another one of these from my balcony two minutes ago. Good times.

  • The RD-180 is probably the most impressive sounding liquid-fuel engine ever built.

  • Awesome sound of a russian engine

  • Am trying to figure out where this was video taped from. When I was stationed at Vandiland I had my favorite observation places. All were on base.

  • This was a sweet night launch. Set off car alarms on the base (I live on base) This was not the largest rocket ever launched here though. The Titan rocket was way bigger than the Atlas.
