i live in joplin proper and i have to do the same thing.fortunately for me the previous owner worked the soil for years so its better than most the backyards around and my lettuce and onion are already showing theyre second set of leaves woot!!

What kind of soil do you have where you live? Here in southwest Missouri I have what some might call a clay based loam - actually it's more suitable for making mud pies. I have to supply a lot of amendments in the form of humus to make it workable.

if you have drought problems or find watering a hasstle lay in some garden hose with little splits in leading up the hill to a water butt.dig the soil down a little and plant in between the rows so the plants have more access to water then the top soil as deeper down the more moist the ground also at night lay plastic sheeting over the topto catch the condensation :)

If you have trouble with water and drought try a wicking bed. Google it.

I bet you,ll make a nice garden right there?I garden every year and love it.You said its not hard work i kinda agree with you and disagree some too.One if you love gardening its a labor of love. Also when you have a mid summer drought and have no choice but to water it every day or watch it literally burnup it canbe work. But even then i love my garden
