RIP CESARIA EVORA [27.08.1941 - 17.12.2011]

CESARIA ÉVORA (27.08.1941 - 17.12.2011) was a Cape Verdean popular singer. Nicknamed the "barefoot diva" for performing without shoes, Évora is perhaps the best internationally known practitioner of "morna."
Cesária Évora -- Cize to her friends -- was born on the 27th August 1941 in Mindelo, Cape Verde. Her bright voice and physical charms were soon noticed, but her hope of a singing career remained unsatisfied. A Cape Verdean women's group and the singer Bana both took her to Lisbon to cut a few tracks, but the recordings failed to catch the ear of a producer. In 1988, a young Frenchman of Cape Verdean extraction invited her to Paris to make a record. At 47, she had nothing to lose. Having never seen Paris, she agreed.

MARISA de AZEVEDO MONTE (born July 1, 1967 in Rio de Janeiro) is a Brazilian popular singer.
While classically trained in opera singing, she grew up surrounded by the sounds of the Portela samba school, and combines diverse influences into her music. After failing to break through 1980s Brazilian Pop rock she went to semi-exile in Italy where she met the famous producer Nelson Motta (soon her boyfriend). Thereafter she became a hybrid of MPB diva and Pop rock performer. While most of her music is in the style of modern MPB, she has also recorded traditional samba and folk tunes, as well and songs performed by Marvin Gaye, Lou Reed and George Harrison. Much of her work has been in collaboration with musicians/songwriters Carlinhos Brown, Arnaldo Antunes, and Nando Reis, and producer Arto Lindsay. She has also worked with foreign artists such as Laurie Anderson, David Byrne, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Julieta Venegas. In 1996, she contributed a version of "Waters of March", in a duet with David Byrne, to the AIDS benefit compilation album Red Hot + Rio produced by the Red Hot Organization. She also collaborated with Bonga and Carlinhos Brown on the track "Mulemba Xangola" for the AIDS benefit compilation album Onda Sonora: Red Hot + Lisbon produced by the same organization. Again, in 2011, she contributed a collaboration with Devendra Banhart and Rodrigo Amarante "Nú Com A Minha Música" for the Red Hot Organization's most recent charitable album "Red Hot+Rio 2." The album is a follow-up to the 1996 "Red Hot+Rio." Proceeds from the sales will be donated to raise awareness and money to fight AIDS/HIV and related health and social issues.
Marisa Monte is unique as a Brazilian artist due to the fact that she owns the rights to all of her songs; it was the main demand to renew her contract with EMI Music.

  • It's beautiful, and also correct as labeled - Cesaria Évora singing with Marisa Monte. Beautifully interpreted, and made all that much greater by the simple acoustic arrangement. Thanks for posting this!

  • We'll miss your voice Cesaria..

  • She isn't among us... rest in peace, Evora!

  • rests in peace

  • @Maskedman46 It is all good...By the way for your information, Marisa Monte is from Brazil and speaks Portuguese. Here with Cesaria they are singing in "Criolo" which is Portuguese basis mixed with some dialect from Cape Verde island where Cesaria Evora is from. Happiness for yah !

  • Mariana...to you I apologize not knowing Spanish singers at all except when Marisa sang Sway in English that was removed because I looked...I had no clue who was singing but I love your romantic choices in music whatever you upload...Never heard her sing Spanish ever and certainly didn't sound like Sway...

    ~MM~

  • @fernandosd10 Fernando I do not know Marisa at all except seeing her sing an English song Sway which was removed...Cesaria I never heard in my life...To suggest "ANYONE" would recognize her voice from far away is kind of Sarcastic to a Lithuanian who doesn't know Spanish from a hill of beans but I love the sound of the language in song...I could say the same thing to you about a Lithuanian singer about Anyone would know this Lithuanian singer in the world but would that be true? Of coarse not!

  • @Maskedman46 Sorry but I do not believe you know Marisa Monte well... Of course this is Marisa singing with Cesaria Evora, Marisa's chrystal voice is so unique that anybody would regonize her voice from far away... Cesaria Evora and Marisa Monte are for me the most beautiful voices in the world... Marisa sings another song with Cesaria called " E Doce Morrer no Mar", also another gorgeous song.
