Andrea Levy tells the story of how she came to write this fascinating novel of Jamaica during the last turbulent years of slavery and the early years of freedom that followed.
July is a slave girl who lives upon a sugar plantation named Amity, and it is her life that is the subject of this tale. She was there when the Baptist War raged in 1831, and she was also present when slavery was declared no more.
Advertising defintely pays....I saw the advert for "The Long Song" at Kings Cross station on Friday and I thought I must see if it's a worth while read. From the reviews I'll defintely be buying it. I think learning about European and West Indian history is a beautiful thing...it enlightens the past and empowers your future.

Britain small and short experience with global slavery added little to the UK wealth and when the UK was the first country to end slavery after thousands of years of slavery, it did no damage to the UK economy.

I'm pleased to say it's on my book wish list. I just saw for the frist time Small Island on Masterpiece Theater and was very pleased. It's enlightening and helps to fill-in the parts of history I was never taught in public schools. Ms. Levy -- Namaste
