India, or most of the Indian sub-continent was united as empires from ancient times. The Mauryan empire (Hindu/Buddhist) was the first, in 3rd C BC, right after death of Alexander of Macedonia. The Mughals were Muslim Emperors, but they were not the first emperors of India.
