Contrary to popular belief, there is one species of snake found in the Hawaiian Islands. It's the harmless Brahminy Blind Snake which was introduced in the 1980's and is easily mistaken for an earthworm.

  • These do actually have eyes which are covered with scales and only allow them to differentiate light from dark.

The really strange thing is that they are all considered to be female and reproduce by Parthenogenesis (check out details on Wikipedia).

  • These little guys are really cool - the first time I saw one, I thought it was some hyper-active earthworm. If you look very closely, you can see a tiny forked tongue flicker about "tasting" the air. Their scales are so minuscule that the body looks like a smooth, shiny skin. They are totally harmless and the mouth is actually so small, you need a magnifying glass to see it.
