They were the "Saviors Of Pop Music" coming out of the turbulent 60's. With the 'Carpenter' name, came a genuine sincerity and innocence never found before in Pop music. And in December of 1974, Karen and Richard Carpenter were "On top of the world" after they recorded and released their #1 version of the tear provoking, "Please Mr. Postman."

This was December 1978. Richard was suffering his addiction to quaaludes at the time. Karen explained his absence by saying he was sick with the flu. In January 1978, Richard checked himself into a clinic to seek treatment for his addiction.
