U.S. Womens Nationals 48 kg semifinals Clarissa Chun (Sunkist Kids) dec. Joey Miller (OCU Stars), 3-0, 6-0 at 2009 ASICS U.S. National Championships in Las Vegas, Nev.
It's not required at that level of freestyle wrestling, and it wasn't really enforced for kids until this year. It's mandatory in high school and college wrestling. Most folks don't wear headgear in practice, although there may be some clubs or high schools that require it. I don't know any that do. A lot of wrestlers like wearing cauliflower ear as a badge of honor, but it does suck if you get it in the area of your ear canal. No more ear buds after that happens.
Looked as if if Chun gave her opponent a tough lesson in wrestling.....Probably it's intimidating - at least a little intimidating - to have to go out there and wrestle a current world champion.
The blue wrestler was wearing a headgear, apparently to provide each protection - wonder why more wrestlers don't use headgear.
Miller has been wrestling since at least age 8, at all levels. She did great for a tought match against a veteran like Chun.

Generally, headgear isn't worn. But if the opponent doesn't object, they usually allow it.
