When Amy Gutmann http://www.upenn.edu/pennnews/amy_gutmann.php was inaugurated as President of the University of Pennsylvania in October 2004, she launched The Penn Compact http://www.upenn.edu/compact/index.html. It has become the vision that expresses the Penn communitys commitment to propel the University From Excellence to Eminence. To fulfill the Penn Compacts commitment to local engagement, the University of Pennsylvania is collaborating with local communities on many bold initiatives to improve public education, public health, economic development, employment opportunities, the quality of life, and the physical landscape of West Philadelphia and Philadelphia as well as to promote sustainable and equitable economic growth throughout the region. President Amy Gutmann recently discussed the importance of engaging locally with Penn Civic Scholars, who commit to a four-year experience in civic service and scholarship with close faculty mentorship that achieves certification as a Penn Civic Scholar at graduation.
