@UnicycleFilms, Yes, that method would be more efficient and faster than this tutorial's method. As for the magic wand deselection and selction... I would just lasso select everything inside the rose and simply select "add to selection" tick box in the upper left hand corner of PS. Likewise, I woulda just did a box selection of the lower part of the screen and selected the"remove from selection" tick box instead of using the magic wand tool.

@fagerstrandaren you need to lower the tolerance down to about 15 or 20 then you will be able to select just what you want :-)

What if the magic wand tool selects more then I want it to? Mine selected the whole picture :S

Can't you just mask out the rose then make it a new layer then change the pic to black and white?
