Yes. Your instinct are correct. The best way to lubricate the plunger cup is to take a dab of petroleum jelly (Vaseline) with your finger and spread it around the outer edges of the plunger cup.

I'm very confused about how you lubricate the plunger cup. Is the finger the best way to lubricate the plunger cup at the bottom of the shaft of the pump?
