Wow, 33 times? That is a little ridiculous, do you have a news article or something where you read that?
Also, the chief obviously had to apologize whether the officer was in the wrong or not. It is a public relations sort of thing. Maybe the chief is actually upholding his oath, to "protect and serve", not "become a self-righteous douchebag"
I don't have the news article committed to memory. You can find it if you keep googling "Kalamazoo Officer Injures Teen". I would like to address your belief that the chief had to apologize whether the officer was in the wrong or not. It doesn't appear that you're in law enforcement, so I won't be harsh with you, but nothing could be further from the truth. If the chief believes that his officer did not intentionally hurt the punk, then he has an obligation to stand up for him. Had this
chief done just that, this would never have become a big story. By disciplining his officer who he himself believes did not injure the teen out of malice, he has now opened up his department even further for a lawsuit. Not only that, but he is sending a message to his officers that if a criminal resists, the officer may end up being disciplined for responding with the necessary force. Now these cops will hesitate before taking action which could result in them getting injured or
killed. The criminals who watched this coward of a chief on the news will just look at this as a way to cash in on the police department. All of this is bad. As for your statement that the chief was upholding his oath to "protect and serve", let me just tell you this as a police officer of 13 years: Most chiefs do no more to "protect and serve" than you or I do to contribute to the space program. The one that protected and served in this scenario was the officer that arrested the little
fucker for causing a disturbance at the bus station. He removed a person who was creating a nuisance. He did his job and look how he was rewarded. He got a 10 day suspension, and 33 time offender got an apology from the one person that should have been looking out for his officer.
