We were having an election party this night and after this call we went out and bought champagne and when we got back Florida had been retracted.

I understand why all the networks thought Gore had it in the bag when they believed he had carried Florida. What I don't get, is why they were so convinced that Bush would win the popular vote. The pre-election polls had Bush ahead, but the Election Day exit polls were skewed in Gore's favor.
Usually, the last votes to get counted in Cali are from S.F. & L.A. Counties. Cuyahoga and Broward Counties (Cleveland & Ft. Lauderdale) always count late. These are Democratic bastions.
