Irene Papas, actress, singer, is one of Greece's best. The ode she sings to the river is pure poetry. I tried to capture the essence:

River, my river, flow and roll in your greatness. Take me, carry me away as you grasp the rocks through the meanders and dance, murmuring and weeping. Beyond my pain, drown my tears.

River, my river, great river, my sweet river, I give myself to thee, to your rapid current.

What if the body were the voice of love? Is it resurrection, revolution, revelation. Or the real lover, the river...

  • @Hatsumeha there is some explanation of the album Odes on the internet: Vangelis and Irene Papas lyrics : odes. Not a direct translation though.

  • She says "river, take me away" The song is from the period before the Greek revolution in 1821, against Othomans Turks and the slave singer wants to take him away where the river goes, maybe to the unknown, maybe to the freedom.
