In 1970, North Carolina's first community health center began delivering comprehensive primary care services and health education for all members of the community, particularly those receiving inadequate health care or with limited access to services. At six centers now, Piedmont Health offers a full team of medical professionals: physicians, physicians' assistants, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, nutritionists, lab technicians, social workers and many other clinical and support staff. Preventive and restorative dental services are available at four of the health centers. A medical home for patients, Piedmont Health is, perhaps, a model for the nation's health care.
