The Lake Powell Resort located near Wahweap marina is a stepping off point to the houseboat experience. The Rainbow Room offers a good menu for dinner and breakfast and overlooks the lake.

John Wesley Powell said of the area in 1869 "A curious ensemble of wonderful features". I would call it the Grand Canyon filled with water and boats. The Glen Canyon Dam started blocking water in 1963. The 2nd largest manmade reservoir in the US. It straddles Arizona and Utah (but is mostly in Utah).

The houseboats range from a 45' Expedition to a 75' Excursion. I went for the 59' Discovery XL which can handle up to 12 people but with the four of us, each had their own private sleeping quarters. You can add the water toys from two person jet skies to a 36' weekender power boat. With the boat the crystal clear warm waters are seductive for water skiing and wake boarding. The flat as glass morning or late afternoon bays are often yours alone.

Fishing on Lake Powell: There are large mouth and stripped bass, black carp, bluegill, trout, walleye and catfish. And at the right time of day the action explodes. The Sumerset house boat we chartered was comfortable and fairly easy to manage. Top deck was ideal for sleeping under the stars and futons were provided.

The scenery around Lake Powell is awe-inspiring with red rock towering cliffs and sandy beaches. The Rainbow Bridge is the world's largest known natural bridge, spanning 275 feet and is 290 feet high. It was here that Barry Goldwater was said to have slept on the top of the bridge saying that to really know this land you must sleep on it.

There is abundant hiking and exploring across the many mesas and plateaus around the lake which gives other-worldly views. And if your lucky a rainbow or two.

  • Yes, but he still caught the fish! The other fishing pole wasn't even in someone's hand when the bait was struck. Luckily the 14-year old got to it in time before the pole went overboard and caught the catfish. Incidentally all fish were released back into the lake.
