Once able to escape earth's gravitational pull and in space, a spacecraft just keeps going in its orbit path needing minimal propulsion. The moon poses similar difficulties but not in as large a scale and being our immediate solar neighbour, it is only logical and financially feasible to send manned missions there first. I'm sure man will land on mars in the near future i just hope to be alive when it does happen. Hopefully i've cleared some of your doubts, happy to answer any more questions.
@Thewaterlily. There is no gravity in space infact its the closest you can get to a perfect vaccum and mars does have an atmosphere and slight surface gravity. now the main difficulties facing manned missions are the important and expensive delta v needed to get out off earth's atmosphere and into orbit and the other small issue of the effect of lack of gravity on the human body in space during this trips (bearing in mind it takes months to get to mars). However the technology is obviously there
Okay, I find it very suspicious that we can barely get to the Moon, but we could get a rover all the way to Mars. It is big and heavy looking. I thought we had no gravity in space? So it can roll around the surface of Mars and not float off from lack of gravity? Something just doesn't add up. Either the gov is hiding something or we are being lied to. We haven't even searched the vast depths of our oceans to the ocean floor. Something weird is going on.
From what I've read, it's actually very close. I know the multiple stages was accurate, as well as the airbags before landing. It's very close, and amazing.
