Part two of the return trip from Watkinsville, the video picks up at College Station road, continuing under the wooden bridge, past the old CofG yard, behind Foundry St and over North Avenue. After waiting for a CSX train (unfortunately didnt have time to get my camera for that) we proceed down the north leg of the old wye. The video ends right before the perimeter overpass when the battery dies. A great day of railfanning.

  • Central of GA former line back at work. Amazing to see the trackage footage. What is sad though is to see how much it is built up and all of those wonderful places that used to have trains and tracks. Hanna Bat Factory was located around Foundry St as well as Coal and Matress Company.

  • @CU2010ITS: If you havnt been to Athens since atleast the early 90's you would have a hard time recognizing alot of places. The former Georgia Railroad yard was wiped away around 97 or so and now a new bus terminal and a giant condo tower sit there. I've seen old maps and the place was full of tracks, nothing but the CofG main left, the CofG yard is now a parking lot. I'd love to go back in time and see Athens when its railroads where in their prime.

  • so how is that diamond protected at 05:37 ? is it just a manual handthrown derail or signal? what railroad is crossing there, csx?

  • @Conraildan: Yep, handthrow derail, once they get permission from the CSX dispatcher they have to wind down the timer and then take off the derails. The line is the CSX Abbeville Sub.

  • Had y'all took the siding there at 2:40 y'all would have probably got some dumb chick, IInteresting how she didn't notice the train till she almost stepped on the rails.

  • Im surprised she just didnt walk into the side of the train, im amazed that she could be totally oblivious to the big smoking GP10 with Leslie horn blaring. Thats UGA girls for ya i guess, all looks and not much else!

  • @nikosjk1 I have ridden the rails on C of GA and remember seeing E7 and E8 on the line where the yard used to be and remember the buildings that were next to the street. I had an Aunt who worked in those buildings many years ago before her and my Uncle moved to Atlanta in 68. I remember the Texeco Gas terminal in the Southern yard and when it exploded which could be felt for miles. I have old pictures from what I have taken and have some from my fathers collection. Thank you for sharing the vids
