Romanian handball player Marian Cozma was stabbed to death early Sunday during an altercation with 3 hungarian-gipsys at a disco in the Hungarian town of Veszprem

The 26-year-old Cozma and 2.11 m told , who played for MKS Veszprem, was celebrating the birthday of a teammate's child when the altercation broke out between players and other disco clients. He died in the hospital two hours later.

The verbal row degenerated into physical violence and two other team members, a Croat identified as Ivan Pesic and Serbian player Zarko Sesum, were seriously injured and hospitalized.

MKS chairman Akos Hunyadfalvy said Cozma was mistaken for someone else and attacked while he was dancing with his girlfriend, Romanian news agency Mediafax reported. The fight continued outside the disco.

Pesic was stabbed in the kidney and Sesum was hit on the head, the agency said.

About 200 fans gathered and lit candles next to a photo of Cozma.

Cozma, a member of Romania's national handball team, previously played for HCM Constanta and Dinamo Bucharest
