Look closely around the source in the middle. You cans see little wisps of smoke shooting from it. These are the trails of alpha particles being emitted from it. I plan on making another video with a high quality video camera.

This is my cloud chamber I made from a clear paint can I got at a craft store. The design is fairly straight forward, I used a block of dry ice on the bottom and a bag of hot water on top. The alcohol soaked cloth is held to the top of the chamber with several magnets. After several minutes the cloud forms and begins to thicken. When a high energy particle passes through the supersaturated cloud, The water vapor around it condenses to form a "trail" of the particle. The source in my chamber is .9 microcuries of americium.

  • I think the chamber itself is too tall so it doesn't work as well as it could.... I'm thinking I'll use a lantern globe for the next one...

  • Yeah it is Am-241 and I was using a flashlight in this video and the operator was a little shaky and I was using a poor quality still camera on video mode. Now I'm using an opaque projector and a nice video camera. I'll probably post a new video at some point.

  • 5 Stars for the music lol.

But it was actually kind of hard to see some of those trails, even with the highlights. I'd suggest a brighter light... and it almost looks like a laser diode in there too although I'm pretty sure that's your Am-241 and a reflection.
