What I Love About Limerick with...Daragh Dukes, musician and frontman with Headgear

Castleconnell
I live out in Castleconnell, which has some cracking bars; within about 2 minutes walk from our place we've got Guerin's, Hickey's and Bradshaw's so more often than not I meet people for a drink locally rather than heading into the city. An evening out in Castleconnell would inspire anyone, believe me. When I do get into the city I always enjoy a pint in the front bar in Nancy's or I go to Dolans. I like a regular bar rather than the hotel lounge type affair. I'm also a bit out of touch these days as there seems to be so many new places cropping up everywhere you look. I must be due a pub crawl soon to re-acquaint myself.

The old Xeric Music Studio
I got one of those half size guitars for Christmas when I was young and I had it for ages, way too long in fact. I remember playing it in school when people had the regular sized ones and soon I think I was embarrassed into giving it up for a while, unsurprisingly. I got into playing again aged around fourteen and started a band with some friends. Xeric studios opened up around then and there was a really great scene for the next few years as bands had a base to record and rehearse and interact. When I finished school I went with the band to London with Setanta records and we got to play around Europe and the U.K. a bit. I guess I had the music bug from there on.

The Grove, Cecil Street
I like to cook at home and try out stuff. I tend to get a bit carried off with it, kind of similar to writing music, I'll try a bit of this and a bit of that and sometimes it turns out great and sometimes not. Sometimes its better just to follow the recipe! My girlfriend is addicted to green curries so we go to "copper and spice" from time to time. For lunch 'The Grove' up on Cecil street do great soup and salads. Its tasty wholesome grub and they are very cool in there. Also I'd say the same about the Sage café on Catherine street, mighty breads too. And once you've had a nice healthy lunch, for your tea you can hit Luigi's up on Parnell Street for chips with a clear conscience. A portion of curry sauce, cheese and garlic, the whole shebang.

Experimenting with sounds and styles
I started using the name 'Headgear' in 2000 and began writing on my own with a sampler. It was a way of being free to use any instruments or sounds without being limited to what you had in a rock band. I still find it a great way to write as the possibilities are endless. Limerick always has a wealth of great music going on and there are so many acts that are doing good stuff, too many to try and mention them all. There are also many acts bubbling under the surface and taking shape that I know of and plenty more I'm sure that I don't know of I'd love to see a centre like Xeric opening again in the city though, there is certainly a market for it.

Dolan's
Dolans is a really good venue, particularly since adding the upstairs room. You can have a traditional session in the bar, a jazz group upstairs and an indie band in the warehouse all at the same time and it works. I'm on the road a bit over the next few weeks - we're in Eamon Doran's in Temple Bar in Dublin this Sunday with the Hard Working class Heroes festival. We're back in the studio recording our new album - our third - at the moment too. I'm hoping that'll be out in 2009.
