1:44 was awesome in 3d. The only thing that drove me mad was the end of the film, when the ship arises from the ground and starts to head towards the people running, it was such an old school flop that they decided to run straight when they could have turn left or right. Why?

It's supposed to be a retelling of just about every origin of man myth: our creators create us, sees that we are wicked, then tries to destroy us. Sort of like the old testament God. There's also themes of self-sacrifice, similar to the story of Prometheus or of Jesus. I got the symbolic gestures at least, it's just that the plot itself, the characters, and the dialogue were all fucking terrible.
