Check my official site at http://www.ninjadrummist.com for more videos!

This is a follow up to my previous tutorial / lesson on Finger Control Technique. (Also known as Gladstone technique etc). Check out the first video if you have not already http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-CoYifoIKw

This video is a response to some of the questions I have received via email recently and a more detailed guide to the technique for beginners. If you have any more questions, please email me at lewis@ninjadrummist.com and hopefully I can help.

Please excuse the video quality. High quality videos coming soon...

  • I play American matched grip and my right hand is able to achieve amazing speed with just fingers. My left hand feels like the inbred, retarded cousin, so frustrating. Did you have problems on catching your weak hand up to your dominate hand? Any words of advice or encouragement on this?

  • @Callaar I still have problems in the left hand. I find my left is about half as good as my right most of the time so I try to practice it twice as much. My left is also more prone to squeezing the stick at the fulcrum so I have to concentrate on relaxation more so in the left. What ever you do to improve your weaker hand, its worth remembering that your left is bad because you are right handed and not cos your a bad drummer, I have a lot of students that are very hard on themselves for this.

  • Dear SIr ! I have practiced fingercontrol with matched grip , palms down .

Someone in Sweden said that you can only use french grip to develop

    fast fingercontrol technique .

But i SEE you play really fast in american and matched grip .

So I am not practicing wrong , cause I can not get a hold of the french grip .

Can not manage it . . What do you think about it ?

PS really love your video ! I think you are really great !

  • @caspera666666 As with most techniques, there is not really a preference on grip. I guess one of the reasons I created this video was to dispel the myth that you have to learn a specific grip to achieve this technique. It can be done in any grip.

While I play mostly american grip, I personally try to utilize all grips in my playing. They all have their uses, strengths and weaknesses.

Thanks for the kind words :)

  • dude i think your faster then the dude who has the world record

  • Thanks for the compliment man. Sadly, I'd far from the record though. I can just about break 1000 notes in a minute and the record stands at 1257!

    Thanks for watching!

  • how can you use finger control in german grip? that is just the grip i'm most comfortable. most of my playing comes from the wrists and i want to get more use in my fingers.

  • great video you've helped me brothah!

  • @ninjadrummist yes it's my main problem too! I squeeze the stick at the fulcrum too tightly with my left hand, it's been a challenge to improve it. I also have many problems with wrist motion in the left hand, but that's another story.

good videos, gave me a new perspective on finger control with the traditional grip! thanks
