Brooklyn, NY -

A fire raging through a six-story New York City apartment building is proving difficult for hundreds of firefighters to get under control because of strong winds.

A fire official says at least 20 firefighters have been injured while battling Saturday's blaze in Brooklyn. None of the injuries are life-threatening. Three civilians also suffered minor injuries.

The official says strong winds are complicating firefighters' efforts at the building on East 29th Street. The National Weather Service has issued a citywide wind advisory until 4 a.m. Sunday.

The five-alarm fire was called in at about 6:40 p.m. Over 200 firefighters were called to the scene.

Firefighters have been pulled out of the building, which has about 70 apartments. Dozens of residents were displaced.

  • This is what happens when manpower is reduced. A so called routine fire may be no big deal but adding an aggravating factor like high wind and the forces are sperad too thin to get a quick handle on the situation. Get ready NYC bigger fires coming to a block near you.

  • according to the news this was a voodoo ceremony to give the woman in the apartment good luck, somehow the bed lines caught fire.

I dont think it worked.....people really need to be careful with candels in their homes. this is not a joke.

  • unbelieveable how a fire can start in one apartment and yet engulf a whole entire building.

the tenant of the apartment where the fire started should be sued, and jailed, because of his stupididty all these innocent people lost their possesions and home. A voodoo ceremonry, please stupid ass man

  • i lived right across the street from that building!! i saw it live!!!

  • Good Job Shimon!

  • it was even bigger then this i saw it and smelt it i live on 39 st and about 14 fire turcks passed

  • im suprised with bloombergs cuts there wasnt just 2 fireman there to fight this.

  • And this is a post-war building too (late 50s/early 60s) - a total loss. Kudos to the FDNY for keeping this fire contained - there are homes close-in on all sides, and the wind was certainly a factor.
