Seafood growers and packers are calling for replanting the Chesapeake with oysters from China. But scientists have formed cautious and sometimes conflicting opinions about the promise and perils of planting non-natives. Can Crassotrea ariakensis revive the tidewater seafood economy? Can it create ecological benefits for the ecosystem? Here in their own words are an oyster packer, an oyster grower and two oyster scientists.
Produced and directed by Michael W. Fincham, Maryland Sea Grant.
Wow, a great argument. It seems to me that the best option is to protect the native oysters until they are sustainable. That may not be possible with th level of development in the region. People want great expanses of green lawns, golf courses, and local produce. All of those things include an incredable amount fertilizer (organic or not) which flow downstream. The things that are flowing into our watershed are a result of the lifestyle of the farmers and the recent implants. I have no answer.
