Listen to KRLI on line http://krli.net/ The tinny metallic noise in the sound is an unknown cause by Windows Movie Maker. Demonstration of a Sony HD radio that I received free from a large radio broadcasting company. The HD radio is superior to standard radios in picking up distant stations. It also enables you to receive the HD radio signals not available with standard radios. I had only two radios capable of picking up KRLI 70 miles away the Pioneer SX-1080, and the McIntosh MR-67 tuner, and it was difficult for them, and with the introduction of the new station THE DAM 103.7 right next to KRLI 103.9 they couldn't pick it up much at all. All other standard radios were never capable of getting the KRLI signal. The HD radio tunes in all frequencies including the FM frequencies on the even last digits that are European FM signals, and this gives the radio even more selectivity. The frequency of an FM broadcast station (more strictly its assigned nominal centre frequency) is usually an exact multiple of 100 kHz. In most of the Americas and the Caribbean, only odd multiples are used. In some parts of Europe, Greenland and Africa, only even multiples are used. Try tuning your standard digital radio in your car or home, and you will notice it skips the FM signals with the last digit falling on even numbers . • it's really a great station... what music! I remember well our conversations about this phenomenon/dilemma... I know I've mentioned it before but, on the drive from here to Grand Forks (approx 2 hrs) there is a lot of bleeding of stations, and to complicate things further, it's USA stations VS Canadian ones! A person has to keep hitting the 'scan' button, or just put in a CD!!

  • @75capriceconvertible I would imagine being that close to the border with each country having different regulations for radio stations could be a problem. KRLI is locked in as for as radio station power goes, as there are two other stations within 150 miles that broadcast on 103.9, and one is in Hiawatha, Kansas which I am closer to, and is also a more powerful station, but the HD radio still manages to pull in the selected station by adjusting the direction of the antenna.

  • I'm glad to hear an old schooler admit that digital technology sometimes is superior to analog technology. Most of the vinyl-cd and tube-transistor ideology is bogus to me. Much of the anti cd opinions are based on early cd's that were not remastered before being released on cd. Much of the supposed tube superiority is based on the listener's preference for the distortion that tubes provide. In general, digital technology provides the REAL sound of the source without color. see part 2.

  • @SlackJones1 A good quality DDD cd will always be better than any analog recording, unless you prefer the over saturated and hissy response of analog magnetic tape. Many people do. There is actually software available to large and small studios that introduces the "overdrive" distortion common to analog tape recording to digitally recorded material.

People tend to like whatever they were brought up on, and rumors spread like magic on the internet, Youngsters take these rumors as absolute fact.

  • @SlackJones1 The DDD is the best digital & AAD is the worst, but I think there are distorted recordings in both digital & analog with advantages & disadvantages. I have had some records that really hissed, & were overmodulated when recorded on the magnetic tape, others that were'nt, no distortion and quite , & with some CDs the same. I have a Dean Martin LP, and the identical album in CD. The record has better highs & more detail. Vwestlife proved LPs have more highs, but cds are quieter.

  • @SlackJones1 Hi Burton Yes one has to admit that a lot of the new technology is superior in performance. Tubes vs transistors is a very complex argument. Check out this site on that subject. Type in Milbert Amplfiers for their web site, very interesting reading. I still prefer LP's over standard CD's, but not necessarily Super Cd's or DVD sound over LP's. I also like LPs sound recorded with tube equipment.

  • I have an HD Radio myself and its been my primary FM tuner since I got it in 2006. Like this tuner it too is extraordinarily selective handling adjacent channel interference remarkably well compared to others. Ibiquity most likely has some control over the minimum specs in terms of sensitivity and selectivity for analog reception since they are essentially licensing the technology to chipset makers and equipment manufacturers. My tuner is hooked up to a rooftop antenna as well so that helps.

  • that was an amazing educational video of your new hd radios, i enjoyed it,

after seeing your video, i am going to go buy a hd radio soon and i want to know if i can expect to hear any of the muzak stations broadcasting in hd or is that still a special frequency just for paid customers? and also you mentioned the engineers came out there and lowered the power on the Dam, did they keep that power lowered for good or just for the experiement of reception of krli fm ? thanks for any feedback,

  • @maynardcat Another thing I forgot to mention... while on either side of the border, say a few miles south or a few miles north, my cell phone never works! it's crazy. I have to drive a few miles and wait til I get signal strength. One friend of mine suggested there may be a 'war' between the cell companies, their towers, blocking signals and such. I don't know and don't understand, but it's sure frustrating!
