This clockwork crocodile, which is 230 x 50mm in size, was created by Ernst Paul Lehmann of Brandenburg, Germany in the 1890's. Lehmann catered to the export market where Lehmann toys were very popular.

The crocodile was played with by the children of the Lucy family who lived at Modbury in SA. The family donated toys, books and games to the State Library Children's Literature Research Collection. Due to the careful handling by the family of the clockwork toys they are still beautifully functional today.

For further information on the wind-up toys in the Lucy Collection see http://www.samemory.sa.gov.au/site/page.cfm?u=965&c=6452.

  • that is awesome, do you know if they have a snake version?

  • @TheVicFilms Hi, I have not been able to find any reference to a snake made by the same company, or by another company. The library also has a beetle and a seal.
