Greg Howard offers his take on how the inverted 5ths tuning makes it possible to play bass and rhythm parts all at once with one hand, through easy-to-form chord shapes and natural hand and arm movement.

The instrument used in the video is a Baritone Melody 36" scale 10-string Chapman Stick with the standard Stickup stereo pickup module. It was recorded direct through a StepABout preamp.

For more information about all of the recommended Stick tunings, including mirrored 4ths (as used by Rob Martino), see:

  • que buen video... saludos de Chile.

  • @felipevaander Gracias, Felipe. Algún día voy a viajar a Chile. Saludos de E. U., Greg

  • this pretty much shoots down megatar's videos about the inverted fifths tuning being harder to use.

  • @WyattTheGuitarist There are upsides and downsides to any tuning. If you don't care about playing any chords at all with your left hand, just bass parts, then 4ths in the left hand makes the most sense. If you have 5 accompaniment strings to work with, as on a 10-string Stick, then inverted 5ths gives you the most range and the most possibilities for accompaniment parts on a single group of strings, you can be the bass and rhythm guitar player with just one hand. Thanks for watching

  • oh god

as soon as canon started playing i couldn't believe it

i hate that piece with a passion augh

  • You are two people! I mean, most people have enough problems playing only one of the voices... utmost en sincerely greatest respect.

  • @superbassguitarboy This is the most basic model, a 10-string with the stock Stickup pickup. around $2,000.

There are other models, 8, 10 and 12 strings and with more expensive pickups as well. Pricing info is at the Stick website shown in the description of the video.
